tshintsha

Greetings, Martin! Nceda uxolele ukubhala kwam ngesiNgesi (Please excuse my writing in English, I don't know isiXhosa). Would you kindly look at the query on Talk:ICompany Gardens#Igama le nqaku - perhaps you know which page name is best. Thank you, -- Deborahjay (talk) 10:15, 12 Eye Thupha 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Deborah,
Thank you for your note. Like you , I do not know isiXhosa, but have a handful of words of isiZulu. My total knowledge of teh grammar of isiZulu can be found in ote 2 of the article en:Langalibalele. Based on that knowledge, I suggest that the leading "I" in "ICompany Gardens" should be changed to "i" giving the name "iCompany Gardens" (assuming that isiXhosa and isiZulu are the same in this respect). You should also bear in mind that unlike places such as East London, the AmaXhosa population are relative newcomers to Cape Town - the first clashes between them and white settlers occurred over a 100 years after the founding of the colony around Cape Town and was in the area of the Great Fish River - 500 km from Cape Town. On this basis, it is unlikely that they had their own name for the Company Gardens. Martinvl (talk) 13:12, 12 Eye Thupha 2018 (UTC)
